VERMONT PUBLIC RADIO’S annual insect extravaganza airs live today at noon on Vermont Edition with Jane Lindholm. As usual, I’ll be joining my pal and colleague Kent McFarland of the Vermont Center for Ecostudies to take your calls on this wild journey among the spineless. Listen live or online once VPR posts the show.

Perhaps we’ll talk today about my summer adventures photographing butterflies, from the rare to the prosaic, across the state of Maine. Two rarities for you: Bog Fritillary (Boloria eunomia), above, nectaring on Labrador Tea from a remote bog in central Maine and a Hessel’s Hairstreak (Callophrys hesseli), which is about the size of your thumbnail, resting on a blueberry flower at another bog in southern Maine.

Bryan, Your photos of butterfly’s are so pretty. No wonder you love these little creatures. It is so hot here in Des Moines, IA, maybe it will cool down in July!
