Polar Bears in Montpelier
YEAH, IT’S COLD ENOUGH here in Montpelier for polar bears. Which is only one reason you should bundle up and visit the Unitarian Church in Montpelier at 7PM tonight [which was Friday night] to hear naturalist and expedition leader Sean Beckett discuss the ecology, culture and uncertain future of polar bears. (Sean is one of my graduate students in the Ecological Planning Program at the University of Vermont.) His talk is part of North Branch Nature Center‘s Naturalist Journeys lecture series.
The other reason to get out today is that it’s Charles Darwin’s birthday. As we like to say on Darwin Day, let us celebrate — particularly during this election season — intellectual bravery.
Today is also Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. Not only were these two giants born on the same day, February 12, they were born on the same day of the same year, 1809.
Happy 207th, Abe and Chuck!

I think Charles would have appreciated that!
something similar about Mr. Darwin and Mr. Polar Bear’s expression.
Sea smoke. Love it! See you in May, June and even July, Jill! 🙂
Sea smoke here on Little Deer Isle, Maine. We shall be joyous and make merry in honor of Mr. Darwin.
