Bohemian Waxwing / © Bryan Pfeiffer

Okay, Bohemian Waxwings don’t really wear black berets and black turtlenecks. Nope, they don’t sit in cafes reading Allen Ginsberg’s Howl. But they are free spirits — wanderers now visiting the fruits of our crab apples and other ornamental trees.

Yet when I was on Vermont Public Radio for an all-too-short short segment on winter birds yesterday, I never did get a chance to describe one of the most elegant, striking birds on the continent (and a relative of our more common Cedar Waxwing).

On the VPR segment, I also discuss why we’re hearing more birds singing this time of year. Sorry, it ain’t about an early spring — not quite. You’ll need to wait, oh, three more months for that (at least here in northern New England).

Along Stonecutter’s Way in Montpelier I’ve seen huge flocks of Waxwings – Bohemian or Cedar? Thanks!

I wish I was as pretty as your Bohemian Waxwing and I wish this winter to be over.
